Principal Duties and Responsibilities

To support the establishment and development of student-led societies, student-led projects, campaigns and student enterprises (termed collectively as ‘Student Groups’), through the provision of administrative support, guidance, coordination of group related activities and by acting as a frontline staff member for all student group related enquiries.

Key Tasks

The successful candidate will primarily be driven to bring people together, identify ways to improve our service, and have a track record in delivering results. A background or experience in education or student-led activities is preferred but not essential; evidence of inspiring and supporting people is.

The Students’ Union, along with the entire higher education sector is entering an interesting time, so an ability to challenge conventional wisdom and offer new and innovative ways of thinking and working is also desirable. Key tasks/responsibilities include:

  • To provide accessible information, guidance, mentoring and support to student group leaders and members through a range of methods.
  • To handle enquiries from students related to the joining or setting up of Student Groups.
  • To deliver training and further development opportunities to student group leaders.
  • To facilitate student group involvement in major LBSU events such as Freshers.
  • To assist and support student group leaders to seek fundraising opportunities to aid their growth and development.
  • To provide operational support to the Activities and Events Officer, assisting in carrying out their objectives where relevant.
  • To coordinate the process of allocating grant funding to Student Groups.
  • To work with the Marketing and Comms team to ensure that information about Student Groups and related events is up to date and well publicised.
  • To work, where appropriate, in collaboration with other departments within LBSU and the University to ensure that our collective resources and skills are being best utilized to support student engagement.
  • To promote involvement in LBSU Awards to student group leaders and members.
  • To maintain confidential record keeping systems, including up to date committee lists and membership numbers.
  • To provide general administrative and clerical support for student groups including website updates, travel requests, equipment orders, refreshment orders, printing, and updates of group information.
  • To monitor income, expenditure, and purchases on behalf of student groups.
  • To contribute to monthly updates of individual Student Group leaders and Student Groups as a whole.
  • To maintain an inventory of group related equipment and resources, including monitoring any storage on Students’ Union premises.
  • To work with the Student Activities Manager and group leaders to ensure risk assessments for all relevant society activities are in place, carried out, and updated as required.

Special Features

Occasional evening and weekend work. Based across both campuses of Leeds Beckett University, in Leeds City Centre and at Headingley. Time will be split between working from home and on-campus working.

Person Specification




  • A high standard of interpersonal skills, with strong oral and written communication skills, adaptable to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • A high standard of organisational and administrative skills with proven experience of working under pressure to meet deadlines, and the ability to work on own initiative, without direct supervision

Qualification & Experience

  • Experience of administering online systems such as membership databases, data collection tools, online meeting platforms, preferably for a member-led / campaigning organisation
  • Experience of designing and delivering training
  • Experience of working with volunteers
  • Experience of working with finance systems


  • Current knowledge of trends and issues within the Higher Education sector and the effects this has on the student experience.
  • Understanding of the benefits and challenges of student extra-curricular activities
