Overview
The Student Community Organiser is an exciting role within our Organising & Influencing directorate. We are looking for multiple inspiring students to join us in supporting the student body at Leeds Beckett to make change through community building, organising and autonomous student-led campaigning.
Working alongside other members of the Organising & Influencing team and the elected full-time Student Officer team, we will train you to listen and engage with a broad range of students, identifying leaders and working with them to build their collective and individual power, tackle issues, improve students’ feelings of belonging at Leeds Beckett and make positive change happen. Successful candidates will be strong communicators, driven to bring people together to act around their common concerns, deliver impactful change and overcome social injustice.
Some examples of the work that these roles can expect to be involved in include:
- Buses | Working to extend student fares to all routes across West Yorkshire and in time, working to reduce those fares to £1.
- Part-time Work | Working to increase pathways to employment for students, in particular for international students who are tied to only 20 hours per week.
- Timetabling | Working to reduce the number of days students must be on campus, enabling a wider-spread rollout of hybrid teaching, and giving students more choice over timeslots for their lectures and seminars.
- Communities | Working to build student communities and develop social opportunities in the areas of academia, liberation & equality, faith and nationality.
Skills Development
We see these roles as an investment in you and your future development. If successfully appointed, you can expect to develop the following skills in this role:
- An understanding, working knowledge and ability to relate to diverse communities of people.
- The ability to inspire, motivate and lead others, including those who are different than you.
- The ability to use creative strategies to effect meaningful change that improves the lives of others.
- The ability to plan and organise yourself and others as part of a team.
- The ability to plan, deliver and evaluate training and workshops.
- The ability to develop the potential of others.
- The ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing, to inspire, organise and build strong public relationships.
